Building Bridges Campaign (2015-2018)
In 2015 through 2018, Camp Swatara embarked on the Building Bridges Capital Campaign to enhance the facilities and meet the needs of the growing and vital ministry. The generosity of donors enabled us to exceed the original $800,000 goal by $400,000, raising a total of over $1,200,000—more than double any previous campaign.

The Projects
Bridge Replacement
When the existing bridge was installed in 1949 by the West Green Tree Church of the Brethren’s Men’s Work, the ministry at Camp Swatara was less than 10 years old. As that ministry has expanded it now includes year-round retreats and summer camps as well as a full-service Family Camping Center. Designed with modern recreational vehicles and trailers in mind, a new bridge will be installed in November of 2014. This expanded piece of infrastructure will feature two traffic lanes as well as a pedestrian sidewalk to offer improved pedestrian safety. The appearance of this necessary capital project will enhance and complement the natural beauty of Camp’s entrance.
Major West Retreat Refurbishment
Constructed in 1973, the West Retreat has served as a small group retreat center and summer staff housing for the past 40 years. While the Retreat itself is structurally secure, the changing needs of retreat groups calls for a thorough re-visioning of this space. A newly designed floor plan will feature a significantly enlarged gathering room, five comfortable sleeping rooms, a modern, convenient kitchen, spaciously remodeled restroom facilities and environmentally-friendly geothermal heating and cooling. These vital improvements will ensure that the West Retreat will continue to provide an inviting and functional space for Camp’s ministries to grow. Tour the new West Retreat in 360.
West Lodge Refurbishment
Built in 1953, the West Lodge is one of the oldest and most beloved camping facilities at Camp Swatara. After many years of wonderful retreat fellowship and energetic summer camps, this well maintained building will receive a modernizing renovation. Work is going to include new exterior surfaces and roof replacement as well as extensive restroom facility remodeling. Campaign goals will ensure that the West Lodge will be accessible to all campers, comfortable for retreat groups, and environmentally and economically sustainable for the future.
