Fall Birding Weekend 2018

Make plans now to join other bird watching enthusiasts for a weekend of birding along the New Jersey Shore. Our first stop will be the wetlands at Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge near Brigantine NJ. This is a major water and shorebird stop along the coastal Flyway. All day Saturday and Sunday morning will be spent touring sites in the Cape May area, including the famous Hawk Watch at Cape May Point Park. We will play close attention for late migrants and vagrants. Cape May is famous as a migrant stop as birds hesitate to cross the Delaware Bay at this point. We will return to the camp Sunday afternoon.

On the Trail with God

Our life of faith is a journey.  Join us for a day of exploring the path as we prayerfully walk some of the trails at Camp Swatara.  We will look at preparation for the journey, pay attention to how God meets us on the path of our lives, and learn from scriptural examples of journeys, as we watch for God’s surprises along the way.  The pace will be easy, with time for personal and group reflection at spots on the trail.  The day’s trail guide will be Karen Haldeman (spiritual director, retreat leader, and friend of Camp Swatara).  Registration fee of $20 includes lunch.

Please bring a small knapsack or bag containing a water bottle, your journal, and (if desired) your Bible to carry with you throughout the day.  Sturdy footwear is highly recommended.  You might consider bringing a towel to sit on where there are no benches.

NOTE: Walking will be easy to moderate on unpaved trails, with an optional difficult hike to the Rock Pile after lunch.  Outdoor seating and restroom facilities will be limited.

Global Getaway - Heifer Project Global Village Experience

Due to low interest, this event has been cancelled.

Youth and adults are invited to join Camp Swatara friends for an exciting overnight Global Gateway adventure this fall! This cultural immersion experience will take place at the Heifer Project International Global Village, located at Shepherd's Spring Outdoor Ministry Center (Sharpsburg, MD). The Global Village features replicas of homes, gardens, and livestock from developing nations where Heifer Project is active. Participants will tour the village and then be assigned to one of the eight home sites (Guatemala, Mozambique, Kenya, Appalachia, Refugee, Thailand, or Tibet) to cook dinner, sleep, and make breakfast. The experience will challenge participants to examine their own habits, consumption, and beliefs through unique hands-on learning experiences that seek to promote an awareness and understanding of care for Creation, global economics, hunger, multiculturalism, and poverty. The group will gather at Camp Swatara on Saturday, October 7th to load up and travel to Maryland. A pick-up location in Harrisburg is also an option. We will return to camp on Sunday, October 8th. Participants must be at least 12 years old and youth age 12-17 must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is just $85 per person and includes transportation to and from Maryland, a packed lunch for Saturday, and the Global Gateway experience. Register online at www.campswatara.org or by sending in the form below with your registration fee (non refundable) by Sept. 8, 2017.
